The idea of “talking to animals” has enchanted audiences for generations. Today, this idea is moving closer to reality thanks to a revolutionary initiative. The Jeremy Coller Foundation and Tel Aviv University have launched the Coller Dolittle Challenge for two-way interspecies communication, offering a $10 million prize to anyone who can develop a system that enables real conversations with animals.

Jeremy Coller, president of the foundation, compares the potential of AI in this endeavor to the Rosetta Stone, which revealed the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphics. He believes AI can also decode animal languages. This is not purely speculative; Recent advances have already seen AI algorithms translate bat squeaks and decode pigs’ emotions from their grunts.

Professor Yossi Yovel of Tel Aviv University, also co-author of a study on bat communication, highlights rapid progress in understanding non-human modes of communication. Yovel chairs the Coller Dolittle Prize, which aims to spur further progress through an annual $100,000 prize, leading up to the grand prize. The criteria for these low awards emphasize non-invasive methods and measurement of animal responses in real time. The ultimate goal is to create a system in which animals do not realize they are communicating with humans, similar to the Turing test in AI. Entries for this challenge close on July 31, 2024 and the grand prize criteria are expected to be announced within a few years.

The potential applications of such technology are vast. This could revolutionize animal welfare by better understanding the needs and stress of farm animals, as noted by Dr Katherine Herborn of the University of Plymouth. However, ethical considerations and the true extent of AI’s ability to understand animal communication remain debated. Experts like Robert Seyfarth warn that AI cannot replace the in-depth, long-term study of animal societies needed to truly understand the meaning of their vocalizations.

Nevertheless, Clara Mancini of the Open University sees immense value in AI’s role in this challenge, seeing successful interspecies communication as a monumental human achievement. Yet she emphasizes that beyond decoding animal languages, the greatest challenge will be humanity’s willingness to listen to and respect the rights of animals, recognizing their intrinsic dignity.
