Anthony Gordon now shares what shocked him immediately after joining Newcastle United

Anthony Gordon has shared the one thing that surprised him when he arrived at Newcastle United last year.

The 23-year-old became one of the Magpies’ most expensive signings in January 2023, arriving at St James’ Park from Everton for an initial fee of £40million.

At the time, this was considered a huge amount of money, and many spectators wondered why it cost so much.

But Anthony Gordon has since proven them wrong, becoming a true superstar in black and white. His first full season as a Newcastle United player was incredible, with Gordon proving arguably Eddie Howe’s best player. He became decisive in the final third, securing double the number of goals and assists in the Premier League.

He is also adored by the Toon Army, who immediately adopted him upon his arrival from Everton. They immediately chanted his name, although he was berated by Newcastle fans on every other visit to St James’ Park when he was a Toffee.

Anthony Gordon makes statement about Newcastle fans

Gordon immediately became one of the Geordies, and he has now provided details of his first impression of Newcastle fans after joining the club last year.

He spoke to YouTube channel Channel Four ahead of England’s friendly at St James’ Park, and was asked if he thought there were similarities between football fans in the North East and from Merseyside.

“There are certainly similarities (between the North East and Merseyside),” he said.

“They’re both working class, the same type of people – funny, with a lot of character, always ready to laugh, light-hearted.

“I think the passion for football surprised me a lot. I didn’t really realize how big Newcastle was until I got there. Fans are everywhere, no matter what part of town you are in. I definitely underestimated this part.

Gordon set to miss special experience with Newcastle fans

Until you’re there, you probably don’t realize how important it is. Football is everything in Newcastle. It’s a one-club town, where all football fans come together to support the boys in black and white.

Gordon quickly discovered this when he arrived on Tyneside, and it’s something he’s adopted ever since. He is now part of the community and plays in a way that draws fans to his side. Gordon is direct with the ball, while he works a lot without it. There is a lot of honesty in his game, and the fans in attendance always admire him.

Unfortunately, they won’t get the chance to cheer him on in an England shirt at St James’ Park. Indeed, he will miss Monday’s friendly match against Bosnia-Herzegovina due to an ankle injury.

Although he is not involved, another Newcastle United player will be. Kieran Trippier will captain the Three Lions as he prepares for his first start at St James’ Park since March.
