Fire in suspected ‘grow room’ at Ocean Beach apartment

Three people were temporarily displaced after an apartment caught fire in the Ocean Beach neighborhood on Sunday, June 2. Fire crews responded to the scene at 4835 Orchard Avenue after a 911 call was reported reporting a structure fire around 6:40 a.m.

Residents of the complex were seen gathered outside the building as firefighters assessed the situation.

Battalion Chief Mark Reece said, “Crews arrived to find smoke and fire on the first floor of a two-story apartment complex. Crews attacked the fire, limiting it to a single room, but during that attack they also discovered a possible grow operation, a marijuana grow, in the room. This prompted us to check our HAZMAT to make sure there were no other hazards.

No injuries were reported.

A total of 34 people were assigned to the fire department, including two trucks, four engines and a doctor, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire is not known, but an investigator was dispatched to the scene. A marijuana grow and a small honey oil lab were found in the apartment, according to OnScene.TV.
