Is your air conditioning ready for 90 degree heat? Consider this advice

DENVER (KDVR) — High temperatures in the 90s are expected this week and will put many air conditioning systems under additional strain.

FOX31 asked HVAC professionals how to ensure your cooling system stays in good shape during the summer season. They advise having your system inspected before heavy use this summer.

When to change air filters

Changing clogged air filters can prevent many costly problems. Some manufacturers recommend replacing filters every 30 days under heavy use.

Make sure your air conditioning is clean

Jason Gerlach of Plumbline Services told FOX31 that a simple cleaning can identify problems that could lead to costly replacement of key components of an HVAC system.

“The fan wheel that moves the air, which can become dirty and needs to be cleaned and replaced, causing your evaporator coil in part of your air conditioner to become clogged with dust and debris,” a Gerlach said.

Signs of Problems with an AC System

A faulty thermostat, loud noises inside an indoor or outdoor unit, or a lack of fresh air are a good sign of a problem.

“They can indicate either a low refrigerant level, a lack of air flow in the system or that the outdoor unit has been shut down due to any type of safety installed,” Gerlach said.

Make sure the AC inspector is licensed

A simple inspection of the system can cost between $50 and $200, depending on the home. On the contrary, neglecting the system can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

Electrical connections and safety valves are also tested for safety and functionality.

Many HVAC system manufacturers will not honor their warranty if the unit is not inspected by a licensed contractor. So always check the company registration.
