A number of procedures have been canceled or redirected to other NHS providers after a cyber attack hit major hospitals in the capital.

King’s College, Guy’s and St Thomas Hospitals (including the Royal Brompton and Evelina London Children’s Hospital) and primary care services have been affected by “a major IT incident” involving pathology partner Synnovis, according to letters sent to NHS staff.

The trusts said the incident had had a “major impact” on service delivery, with blood transfusions particularly affected.

A spokesperson for King’s College Hospital in London confirmed it was affected.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, preventing some services from connecting to their main server.

Multiple senior sources told Health Service Journal (HSJ) that the system was the victim of a ransomware attack.

One said access to pathology results could take “weeks, not days.”

Some suggest that emergency care in hospitals will be affected because they may not be able to quickly access blood test results.
