The ancient Irish story of Deirdre of the Sorrows has been reimagined on funk-infused alternative dance track “Dodging Arrows” which will be released as a single by Hawk Jupiter featuring Lauren Davis on June 7.

It’s the second track the Irish producer and singer have teamed up on, following 2023’s “Land Beneath Waves,” inspired by another Irish mythological tale, Tír na nÓg.

The tragic story of Deirdre of the Sorrows has been told and retold for generations, but this may be the first time it’s been accompanied by soaring synths and a compelling bassline.

Powered by energetic drums and an intricate interweaving of horns and synths, the track has a dark, volatile feel that reflects the timeless tale of jealousy and persecution of Deirdre and her lover Naoise, with lyrics that tell the story from Deirdre’s point of view.

“Freedom is ours, we did nothing to deserve this,” Lauren sings, as she shares the tragic story of entrapment, betrayal and resilience.

Musically, the song mixes elements of funk and alternative electro with a frenetic horn section that brings the song to a dramatic and unexpected peak, reflecting the chaos and turbulent nature of the story itself. Those familiar with Deirdre of the Sorrows will recognize the timeless story of persecution, resistance and the quest for freedom.

The song was written by Hawk Jupiter and Helen Agnes D., an Irish composer and artist who is due to release her own album in 2024.

A cinematic music video for the song is currently in production and is expected to follow the release of the single.
