Consider this your 101 guide to dragons in “House of the Dragon”

The show is literally named after them, so it’s only fitting that we give the dragons credits on HBO shows. Dragon House their time. Arrax was the dragon of Lucerys, the son of Rhaenyra, and was born the same year as Lucery’s birth. He and Lucerys are killed after the pair are followed by Aemond and Vhagar, and Arrax burns Vhagar so Vhagar retaliates and kills them both. Arrax was the first dragon to die during the Dance of Dragons.

Caraxes

Caraxes is Daemon’s dragon and is nicknamed “the Blood Wyrm”. He has red scales and is frequently seen with Daemon throughout the first season, and was used by Daemon to help win the war for the Stepstones.

Dreamfyre is Helaena’s dragon, however, Helaena rarely rides her dragon. She stops Aemond from claiming a dragon when he descends into the dragon pit and she breathes fire at him while protecting a nest of eggs.

Rider: Rhaenys Targaryen

Status: Alive

Meleys is nicknamed “The Red Queen” and is ridden by Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Like Caraxes, she has red scales and during her youth, she was faster than Caraxes and Vhagar. In season, she is imprisoned in the dragon’s den during Aegon’s coronation and luckily Rhaenys frees her and they storm the coronation. At the end of the season, she and Rhaenys patrol the skies around the Gullet.

Moon Dancer

Status: Alive

Moondancer is a pale green dragon, but so far he has rarely been seen in the first season of the series. She is claimed by Baela Targaryen.

Sunfyre is the dragon of the new king Aegon. It is known as one of the most eye-catching dragons, right down to its golden scales.

Tyrax

Rider: Joffrey Velaryon

Status: Alive

Okay, technically Tyraxes is related to Joffrey Velaryon, aka Rhaenyra’s youngest son, but given that Joffrey is still a very young child, he hasn’t really ascended yet.

Vermax

Rider: Jacaerys Velaryon

Status: Alive

Vermax is Jacaerys’ dragon, and is seen early in his life when Jacaerys teaches him how to breathe fire on goats in front of Jacaerys’ brother and uncles. He is ridden by Jacaerys to the north to secure the Starks.

Vermithor

Rider: Unclaimed

Status: Alive

Nicknamed “The Bronze Fury”, Vermithor is the second oldest and largest dragon after Vhagar. He was ridden by Jaehaerys I Targaryen until his death and remains unclaimed. Daemon visits Vermithor in his lair, and although he is initially wary of Daemon, he calms down and the pair lock eyes.

Vhagar

Rider: Aemond Targaryen

Status: Alive

Vhagar is the oldest and largest dragon in all of Westeros. She was first ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen during the conquest of Westeros, but after Visenya’s death, Vhagar roams the skies alone.

She is later claimed by Laena Velaryon. During Laena’s difficult birth, rather than die in pain in her bed, she finds Vhagar, whom she orders to breathe fire on her. Vhagar initially refuses but ends up shooting Laena, killing her instantly.

After Laena’s death, while sleeping on the beach, Aemond approaches Vhagar and he manages to claim her as his own.

Later, Vhagar kills Arrax and Lucerys despite Aemond’s attempts to control her and tell her not to do so.
