Attention theater lovers! Here are five local shows to see in June

SALT LAKE CITY — If you’re looking for local theater to enjoy in June, look no further! Here are five shows, including one for the first time, to consider.

1. On view through June 22: “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” at the SCERA Center for the Arts

Located in Orem, the SCERA Arts Center puts its twist on the beloved Disney tale, “The Little Mermaid.”

Chase Ramsey directs this show, with musical direction by Rex Kocherhans and choreography by Janessa Ramsey.

2. JUNE 14-19: “Rock of Ages” at the Ziegfeld Theater in Ogden

Tom Cruise may not appear in this version, but you’ll still get the entire “rock n’ roll fairy tale” in this performance at the Ziegfeld Theater in Ogden.

Following the story of a legendary (albeit fictional) Hollywood location, this Jukebox Musical brings some favorite classic rock songs from the 1980s to the stage. Cassidy Wixon-Heise directs.

3. June 15: “Tea for Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty” at the Salt Lake City Public Library

Emmy Award-winning actress Elaine Bromka will star in this one-woman performance off-Broadway about three first ladies: Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford.

This production received critical acclaim from The New York Times and even a former White House press secretary, according to the show’s website.

This specific production at the Salt Lake City Public Library will be a hybrid event. They will first show the filmed virtual performance, followed by a live Zoom session with the star and co-writer herself, Elaine Bromka. And it’s completely free.

4. June 24-July 6: “Let’s go!” » The John Powell Story at Outlaw Trail Theater

Debut alert! “Let’s go!” is the story of John Wesley Powell. 155 years ago, Powell set out to explore the Green and Colorado rivers. The musical follows this journey, narrated by Powell himself. It will be shown at the Outlaw Trail Theater in Vernal.

This is the first release of this musical, “with barn burners, waltzes and ballads”. Written by Jonathan Stearmer, the play also features music by Alan Doyle.

5. June 14-22: “Silent Sky” at the Empress Theater

Presented at Magna’s Empress Theater, “Silent Sky” follows the life and work of Henrietta Leavitt, who in the early 1900s was unable to explore her passion for astronomy due to her gender. According to the theater’s official plot summary, she joins a group of women acting as “human computers”, mapping the stars for a renowned astronomer.
