The Wizards should take the opportunity to take advantage of the Lakers’ mistake

The Washington Wizards should do everything they can to improve this summer. Maybe they want to tank for another year, but anything outside the roster should be up.

They should improve the front office, scout team, and most importantly, the coaching staff. Brian Keefe is now full-time head coachbut giving him solid pieces to work with will be crucial.

Luckily for the Wizards, there are some great coaching minds floating around. And based on what’s happening with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Wizards should keep their hands on their phones.

UConn head coach Dan Hurley just recently refused the Lakers head coaching job, but his candidacy came after JJ Redick and James Borrego were heavily favored as the main options to take over the job.

These two are would still be in the mix, but one might imagine that there is a bit of awkwardness there now. Everyone knows Hurley was the Lakers’ best option, so how do Redick and Borrego feel?

Well, if they’re both still looking to make a move in the coaching realm, the Wizards would do well to bring them onto the coaching staff.

It seems unlikely that Redick would leave his media role to join the coaching world, unless it’s for a head coaching job, but his NBA experience and three-point excellence would likely make him a excellent assistant in Washington.

Borrego would be the most likely candidate, although he could simply opt to return to his assistant position with the New Orleans Pelicans if he doesn’t get a head coaching job.

That said, Borrego’s offensive mind would fit well on a Wizards team that has guys, such as Bilal Coulibaly and Deni Avdija, who could use some help getting into a winning attack.

Maybe both guys are still fully on board to land the Lakers job, but Los Angeles certainly caused some uncertainty with their Hurley mistake.

If Washington stays on top of the situation and gets in touch with one or both coaches, they should seriously consider trying to convince them to jump ship and join the Wizards staff under Brian Keefe.
