The Malawi Investment and Trade Forum 2024, which aimed to explore ways in which Malawi could advance in various sectors, has been canceled in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Malawi’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Andrew Kumwenda, told delegates gathered at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dar es Salaam that new dates would be announced in due course.

Kumwenda attributed the cancellation of the forum to the death of Malawi Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and eight others who died on Monday, June 10, 20224 in a plane crash in Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba.

The two-day forum attracted local and international experts from different sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, mining, technology and tourism. The delegates only interacted for a few minutes and then went their separate ways.

The cancellation is in line with the Malawi government’s declaration of 21 days of mourning in honor of the late Vice President Chilima and eight other officials who died in a plane crash in the Chikangawa forest while on their way to at the funeral of the former government minister and attorney general. Ralph Kasambara.

The Dornier 228 plane carrying them disappeared over the Chikangawa Forest Reserve, and the wreckage was confirmed on June 11, 2024.
