Mason Greenwood could leave Man Utd for club that offered him ‘life-changing money’

Mason Greenwood could leave Man Utd for club that offered him ‘life-changing money’

Mason Greenwood has reportedly been given the green light to sign for Juventus – five years after their first “life-changing” attempt to buy him from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old forward spent last season on loan at La Liga side Getafe following an internal investigation at United which concluded it would be better for all parties to continue his career elsewhere. He has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

These were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service 13 months later, allowing Greenwood to return to professional football in Spain. His performances there, with 10 goals and six assists in 36 games in all competitions, attracted considerable transfer attention from across Europe.

United look set to maintain their position this summer and allow the striker to leave permanently. According to Sky Sport in Italy, Juventus are leading the race to sign him.

Greenwood’s representatives reportedly indicated the club was his preferred choice during the transfer window, giving the green light for the Italian giants to make an approach. Personal terms are believed to have already been agreed.

Transfer fees could prove to be an obstacle, however, with United reportedly expecting a fee of €50m (£42m). Juventus are expected to offer an initial fee of €30m (£25m) plus bonuses.

Before securing Greenwood’s signature, Juventus must offload either Federico Chiesa or Matias Soule, both of whom have been linked with a move away from the Italian giants to Roma. Soule, 21, is also reportedly attracting interest from Premier League clubs such as Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

Greenwood has been admired from afar by Juventus for several years, even dating back to when he was just 17 years old. Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast in 2020, journalist Andy Mitten claimed the Italian giants were “ready to offer his family potentially life-changing sums of money” in a bid to entice him to going to Italy the previous summer.

Of course, Greenwood gave that up in favor of staying at Old Trafford, scoring 35 goals in 129 senior games and earning himself an international call-up.

Speculation about his future has intensified in recent months. Clubs linked to other than Juventus include Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Spain, as well as Portuguese club Benfica.
