NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday asserted that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had become “irrelevant” and said the Constitution, democracy and society did not need the Sangh or its leader Mohan Bhagwat, because they could protect themselves.

The opposition party’s assertion came after Bhagwat’s comments on a host of questionsnotably on the violence in Manipur and the Lok Sabha elections which have just ended.

Congress media and publicity in-charge Pawan Khera said, “Mohan Bhagwat ji, you reap what you sow. The fault is not with the soil; the fault is with the gardener. »

“When farmers faced the wrath of the weather and police just outside the capital, you were silent. When a young Dalit girl was raped and murdered in Hathras, you remained silent. When farmers rapists of Bilkis Bano were released and your ideological brothers welcomed them”, you remained silent. When Dalits were urinated on, you remained silent when Pehlu Khan and Akhlaq were killed, you remained silent when the links of Kanhaiya Lal’s killers with the BJP were revealed, you remained silent,” Khera told about Bhagwat.

“Your silence and Narendra Modi have made you and the Sangh useless. You have been made useless by Amit Shah and the BJP. Your last chance was when the BJP leaders were talking about changing the Constitution, you should have spoken out but you remained silent,” the Congress leader said.

“What’s the point of talking now?” Khera added.

The Constitution, democracy and this society do not need the RSS or Bhagwat, as they can “protect and reboot themselves”, he asserted.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also attacked Bhagwat and posted a Hindi verse from Kabir on pay’ (loosely translated as ‘you I will reap what you sow’).”

Bhagwat had Monday expressed concern over peace eluding in Manipur even after a year and said the situation in the strife-torn northeastern state must be considered on priority.

Addressing a gathering of RSS trainees during the final program of the organization’s ‘Karyakarta Vikas Varg-Dwitiya’ at the premises of Dr Hedgewar Smriti Bhavan at Reshimbagh in Nagpur, he said that the conflict in various places and in the society is not good.

Bhagwat stressed on unity among all communities in the country, which he said are very diverse, although people understand that they are one and not separate. He stressed the need to abandon election rhetoric and focus on the issues facing the nation.

Talking about the recent Lok Sabha polls, Bhagwat said the results were out and a government had been formed in order to avoid unnecessary discussions on what happened and how etc.

The RSS does not involve itself in such discussions on “kaise hua, kya hua”, he said, adding that the organization is only doing its duty to create awareness on the need to vote.

Bhagwat stressed the need for consensus between the ruling party and the opposition so that work for the common good (of the masses) could be carried out.

There are always two camps in an election, but we must maintain the dignity of not resorting to lies to win, said the RSS leader.

Lies have been spread using technology (an apparent reference to deepfakes, etc.), he added.
