NWSL team faces ‘unfair’ situation due to venue change

The Chicago Red Stars found themselves in a difficult situation through no fault of their own.

This September, the Riot Fest Music Festival will take place at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, home of the Red Stars. Riot Fest was originally scheduled to take place at Chicago’s Douglass Park. But according to a report from The Athletic, event organizers recently revamped those plans and are now ready to host the event at the home of the Red Stars.

The Red Stars released a statement Thursday that made no comment on how they felt about the situation. Team president Karen Leetzow called the situation “unfair” and expressed her displeasure.

“It is unfair and unfortunate to see our club find itself in this situation, highlighting the vast differences in the treatment of women’s professional sport compared to men’s professional sport. We are committed to ensuring our players and fans have a premier experience on and off the field, and we are working diligently to find a solution that will ensure the success of our match on September 21,” the statement said.

Few people were happy with the decision after it was announced. This will be intriguing to follow as the Red Stars look for another venue for the match.
