Meet the live-action cast of “Moana”: Catherine Laga’aia, Dwayne Johnson

On June 11, 2024, it was confirmed that Catherine Laga’aia would lead the upcoming film as Moana.

“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” Catherine said in a statement. Variety. “My grandfather comes from Fa’aala, Palauli, in Savai’i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai, on the main island of Upolu in Samoa. I am honored to have the opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.

Following its casting announcement, Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original 2016 animated film, reacted to the news on her Instagram Stories. “EŌ Moana! Our village has become much bigger❤️❤️❤️,” she wrote on June 12, 2024.

Although Auli’i won’t be reprising her character in the live-action film, she will serve as executive producer on the project!

Adding to the roster, Auckland native John Tui steps in as Moana’s father, Chief Tui, while Frankie Adamsa talent from the vibrant Samoan-New Zealand community, takes on the role of Sina, Moana’s foster mother. Rena Owenoriginally from the Bay of Islands, plays the beloved character of Gramma Tala.

The exciting live-action project was unveiled last April, marking Dwayne Johnsonthe triumphant return of Maui, while also being a producer.

Moana will be led by Thomas Kailwho worked on Broadway Hamilton, fat live And We were the lucky ones.

“I’m thrilled to have met Catherine, Rena, Frankie and John throughout this casting process,” Kail said. “I am humbled by this opportunity and can’t wait to all be on set together. And there’s no better couple to get in a canoe than Catherine and Dwayne – actually, trio: Heihei’s ready too.
