Tang announces family programs for summer 2024

Tang announces family programs for summer 2024Events include France Day, Family Saturdays, Grass Crafts and the first Skidmore College Seventeenth Anniversary Celebration.


Saratoga Springs, New York (June 12, 2024) — Skidmore College’s Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery announces a summer full of family activities, including Skidmore College’s inaugural Juneteenth Celebration, Family Saturdays, France Day and crafts on the grass.


All events are free and open to the public. Artistic creation activities are aimed at children aged 5 and over, accompanied by an adult. The Tang encourages multigenerational creative cooperation.


The museum, on the Skidmore College campus, is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. The campus entrance is at 815 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, New York. Visitors can find ample parking in a parking lot adjacent to the museum.

Skidmore College Seventeenth Anniversary Celebration


Saturday June 22, from noon to 3 p.m.


The celebration includes arts and crafts, storytelling, food and performances themed around freedom and Juneteenth, with ongoing activities and scheduled events inside and outside the museum. Drop-in craft activities, hosted by the Tang team of educators who host Family Saturdays, include a community wall hanging featuring paper chains and decorative bowls woven with yarn. Black-owned businesses will have items for sale including clothing, crafts, flowers, baked goods and more. Visitors can also check out books at Skidmore’s Lucy Scribner Pop-Up Library.


Scheduled activities include Skidmore faculty and staff reading children’s books from noon to 3 p.m., with a new book every fifteen minutes. The list of books can be found on the Tang website.


The musical performances will be:


  • Noon-12:15 p.m.: Welcome and hip-hop dance show by Prodigal B
  • 12:15-1:15 p.m.: Neo-soul musical performance by Adrian Emanuel
  • 1:15 p.m.-2 p.m.: Congolese dance and drum workshop by Nkoula Badila and Angel Lau
  • 2-3 p.m.: Gospel performance by The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band


This Skidmore College event is co-sponsored by Black Studies, Political Science, History, American Studies, Intergroup Relations, International Affairs, Theater, Sociology, Music, Lucy Scribner Library, Museum of Tang Education and the President’s Office.


Family Saturdays


Saturdays July 6, August 3 and August 17, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.


Our popular Family Saturdays promote multi-generational creative cooperation by viewing, discussing, and engaging in a hands-on art-making activity. The programs, free and open to the public, take place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. They are suitable for children aged 5 and over, accompanied by their adult chaperones. No registration required; Supplies provided on a first come, first served basis. Led by Njeri Jennings, Laurie M. Tisch Educator for K-12 and Tang Teaching Museum Community Programs, programs are inspired by current exhibitions and artworks from the Tang Collection. Details for each Family Saturday will be announced at a later date.


Crafts on the grass


Thursdays July 11 to August 15, 5:30 p.m.


Before each Upbeat on the Roof concert, Tang Museum educators will offer Crafts on the Grass, art creation kits for children starting at 5:30 p.m. A different kit with a DIY project will be available each week. All projects are suitable for children aged 5 and over, under adult supervision. Materials will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.


France Day


Saturday July 20, from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.


The Tang Teaching Museum’s annual open house features contemporary art exhibits, art-making activities, tours, food, music and more in honor of the museum’s namesake, Frances Young Tang, Skidmore College Class of 1961. Details of the Fête de France, including tours, artistic activities and musical guests will be announced soon and listed on the Tang website.
