President Biden says he won’t offer son Hunter sentence commuted after gun conviction – Chicago Tribune

FASANO, Italy — President Joe Biden said Thursday he would not use his presidential powers to reduce the possible sentence his son Hunter would receive for his federal conviction for gun crimes.

Biden, following the conclusion of a press conference held at the Group of Seven summit of the world’s richest democracies, responded that he would not do so when asked if he planned to commute his son’s sentence. Hunter Biden’s sentencing date has not been set and all three charges carry up to 25 years in prison.

It will be up to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, appointed to the bench by former Republican President Donald Trump, to decide whether Hunter Biden will actually serve some time behind bars.

Biden’s remarks come a day after the White House refused to rule out a possible commutation for Hunter Biden. The president and the White House have said for months that Biden would not pardon his son.

“I am extremely proud of my son Hunter. He overcame an addiction. He is one of the finest, most honest men I know,” Biden said earlier during the press conference on Thursday. “I respect the jury’s decision. I will and I will not forgive him.
