Letter: Patriots, consider Trump’s shameful attitude toward veterans

Another memorial and commemoration of D-Day has passed. Memories resurface of my uncle limping on a heavy wooden leg from injuries sustained during the Battle of the Bulge.

The Associated Press, the New York Times and the Washington Post all independently verified reports from The Atlantic that former President Donald Trump called Americans’ war dead “losers.”

After the death of prisoner of war and Arizona Senator John McCain, Trump declared, “We are not going to support the funeral of this loser.” »

During his welcoming ceremony at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, across the Potomac River from the capital, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley got his first glimpse of the attitude of Trump towards the soldiers. Milley had chosen a seriously injured Army captain, Luis Avila, to sing “God Bless America.” Avila, who had flown five combat missions, lost a leg in an IED attack in Afghanistan and suffered two heart attacks, two strokes and brain damage as a result of his injuries. To Milley and to the Army’s four-star generals, Avila represented heroism and sacrifice in service to country.

Milley’s apprehensions began on his first day on the job in 2019, when Trump reportedly told him that “no one wants to see” injured soldiers after meeting with Avila. Milley came to believe that Trump’s attitude toward the military was superficial and insensitive. Trump thought it “doesn’t make me happy” to stand next to wounded soldiers.

If you consider yourself a patriot and support Trump, you may want to learn critical thinking skills and find the way out of the cult.
