Speaker Randy Weekes has called a meeting of the House Services Committee to consider an opposition request to investigate allegations against Saskatchewan. Party MP Jeremy Harrison.

Notice of the meeting appeared online on the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly archives calendar and indicates the meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 17.

During his end-of-session speech, Weekes spoke out against what he called “intimidating and harassing” text messages allegedly sent to him by Harrison, as well as Harrison’s “disturbing obsession with guns.” deputy.

Harrison resigned as government House leader last month – but remains trade, exports and development minister – after admitting bringing a gun into the legislative building. The minister initially denied Weekes’ claims that he had done so, but said the conversation with his family later jogged his memory.

Last week, the NDP continued to push for the all-party committee to appoint an independent investigator and hear testimony on allegations related to Harrison’s guns and inappropriate behavior.

In a letter to Weekes, health critic Vicki Mowat presented two motions that the opposition believed the committee should consider and adopt. Premier Scott Moe, Harrison, current Government House Leader Lori Carr and senior adviser to the Prime Minister Reg Downs would appear before the committee to answer questions related to the allegations.

The other resolution would be to appoint an independent investigator.

According to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly’s website, the committee “is authorized to consider any matter it considers appropriate relating to the rules, procedures, practices and powers of the Legislative Assembly, its operation and organization.”
