NFL Draft Document Reveals New York Jets Turned Down Rams Trade Offer for Pick 10

The Los Angeles Rams made an offer for the New York Jets’ 10th overall pick

On Friday, the NFL’s official of the league.

In the clip, it is revealed that Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead called New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas with a trade offer for the 10th overall selection.

Sitting at 19th overall, Los Angeles offered New York the 52nd overall pick (second round) in an attempt to move up nine spots to the Jets’ 10th pick. Snead is shown in the clip calling Douglas to offer the package, saying, “Joe, we would think about coming up there, we have 52. Our second round pick.”

Although Douglas’s response to the offer is not shown, Snead says after hanging up: “He doesn’t think they’re going to back down that far.” ยป

In an interview for the documentary, Snead said, โ€œA lot of people don’t like to go back to the first round. You waited a long time for this choice, you studied it, you analyzed it. People will trade, but it usually takes a long time.

Based on the classic Jimmy Johnson trade chart, Douglas was wise to decline the trade. The 10th overall pick alone is worth 1,300 points. The package offered by Snead was worth 1,255 points โ€“ the 19th pick is worth 875 points while the 52nd pick is worth 380 points. That represents a 45-point advantage in favor of the Rams, which is equivalent in value to a late fourth-round pick. So, the Jets would have lost overall value despite adding one more pick, which is always a big no-no for teams going downhill. Typically, the team that goes down wins on the trading chart.

The Jets ended up trading a spot with the Minnesota Vikings, getting a fourth-round pick (129th overall) and a fifth-round pick (157th) for a sixth-round pick (203rd). The picks were essentially free money for Douglas, as the Vikings went for Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy, who the Jets obviously wouldn’t have drafted. With the 11th pick, the Jets selected Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, remained in 19th place and took the lead over Florida State’s Jared Verse.
