POLL: Should we consider Vladimir Putin’s ceasefire conditions? | World | News

Vladimir Putin announced on June 14 the two major conditions he wants Ukraine to accept to end the fighting in this war-torn country and negotiate a peace agreement.

Speaking at his country’s Foreign Ministry, the Russian president said kyiv must abandon its plans to join NATO if it wants the war to end now.

Additionally, he demanded the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions – even areas that were never invaded by Russia or liberated by kyiv.

Putin also added lifting sanctions on Russia and Ukraine maintaining its non-nuclear status as additional conditions for a ceasefire.

Ukraine has long said it would not accept a peace deal involving ceding its internationally recognized territory to Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Putin’s proposal hours after the Russian leader’s speech.

Comparing this to demands made by Adolf Hitler before the start of World War II, Mr Zelensky, who is attending a peace summit in Switzerland this weekend with dozens of other world leaders, told Italian broadcaster Sky TG24: “These messages are ultimatum messages. It’s the same thing Hitler did when he said “give me part of Czechoslovakia and everything will end here.”

The Ukrainian leader, who hopes to see a path to peace charted at the summit, was apparently supported in his decision by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who said Putin’s proposal was “not made in good faith.

Before leaving for the summit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a similar comment, saying Putin’s plan “wasn’t serious.”

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also rejected Moscow’s ceasefire plan, saying: “Putin has illegally occupied Ukrainian sovereign territory. He is not in a position to dictate to Ukraine what it must do to achieve peace. »
