ESPN wanted to offer an NFL Sunday ticket for just per season with single-team packages, but the NFL turned them down

The long-awaited NFL Sunday Ticket trial is finally underway and some interesting details are starting to emerge. At issue is a lawsuit claiming the NFL is driving up the cost of watching games.

Disney has proposed offering ESPN’s NFL Sunday Ticket for just $70 per season with options to purchase single-team packages, according to Edvard Pettersson of CourthouseNews.com.

Apple also attempted to gain rights by arguing that if they offered the NFL Sunday Ticket, it could add 15 to 20 million new customers to their Apple TV service.

According to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, the NFL would rather keep the service as a premium offering rather than try to get a massive number of subscribers for less money.

A $70 per year package sounds good, but it’s unclear how much Disney has offered to pay the NFL for the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. It’s possible that Google’s bid was significantly higher for the NFL, allowing them to choose the highest bidder for their service.

For now, the NFL is hoping the league’s broadcast antitrust exemption will allow it to resolve the matter. We are probably far from done uncovering interesting details that will be dropped as the trial continues.
