Wild encounter of man sitting on toilet: ‘So shocked’

Back when many Australian homes had latrines, it was common to check under the toilet seat for spiders or any other unwanted intruders.

And it’s advice this unlucky homeowner could have used.

Owner Witoon Sonapoon, 62, was sitting on the bowl and relieving himself in his bathroom at his home in Thailand this week when a large python emerged from downstairs and made itself known.

Witoon immediately stood up after feeling a sharp pain in his back, climbing frantically on the tiled floor before turning around to see the snake rearing its head from the U-bend.

“I was just sitting and relaxing when the snake suddenly bit me. I was so shocked that I ran out of the bathroom,” he said.

The retired driver said the snake bite was not particularly serious, but added that he went to the hospital to have his injury treated.

Volunteers untied the toilet to try to fish out the python, but it had already retreated into the plumbing.

“I also saw a snake coming out of the toilet three times last month, but it didn’t hurt anyone, so I left it there,” Witoon said.

“I always see snake encounters reported on TV, but I never thought I would experience it myself. Other people should also be careful of snakes when using the toilet,” he said. he added helpfully.

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where it lives in forests, swamps, canals, and even cities, leading them to come into common contact with humans.

They often enter the underground pipe system where they can travel through the tubes and emerge into bathrooms. The species is one of the largest snakes in the world and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.
