Surrey Police officials said they contacted police after their officers crashed into a cow just outside London.

Britain’s Home Secretary demanded an “urgent explanation” on Saturday after police officers were filmed ramming a fleeing cow with their car.

Surrey Police said it had referred to the Police Ethics Monitoring Committee over the incident in Staines-on-Thames, just outside London.

The force said officers responded to reports of a loose cow “running at members of the public” and damaging a car on Friday evening. The police spent several hours trying to catch the animal and, finally, “it was decided to arrest it using a police car.”

Footage posted on social media showed a cow running down a residential street, hit by a police car, getting back up, then hit again.

The cow suffered a large cut on its leg and was being treated by a veterinarian, police said.

Home Secretary James Cleverly posted on X: “I see no reasonable need for this action. I have requested a full and urgent explanation on this matter. This seems to be unnecessarily harsh.

The images have sparked anger in animal-loving Britain.

BBC nature presenter Chris Packham tweeted: “What kind of monster sticks a calf? »

Surrey Police said it had informed the Independent Office of Police Conduct, which investigates allegations of misconduct against officers.

Chief Inspector Sam Adcock said “the decision to use the police car was only made after other methods to stop the cow had failed.

“There will be an investigation into the actions that led to this, but our goal at all times is to ensure the safety of the public.”
