T20 World Cup: Pakistan eliminated after USA-Ireland match canceled

Highlights:

  1. The cancellation of the USA v Ireland match eliminates Pakistan from the T20 World Cup.
  2. Pakistan’s poor performance and defeat to the United States contributed to their exit.
  3. Ireland’s Super 8s hopes were also dashed by Florida’s collapse.

The USA vs Ireland match was called off on Friday due to an unplayable wet outfield, leading to last edition’s runners-up Pakistan being officially eliminated from this year’s T20 World Cup.

With both teams receiving a point after elimination, the United States reached a total of five points, securing their place in the Super 8. Even if Pakistan wins their match against Ireland on Sunday, they will only be able to reach a maximum of four points, insufficient to progress.

For Pakistan to qualify, the USA v Ireland match had to take place and Ireland had to win, giving Pakistan a chance to beat Ireland and advance. However, the weather intervened and Babar Azam’s team was eliminated.

Kamran Akmal expressed his disappointment, stating that it was very disappointing and sad that the Pakistani team could not reach the Super Eight. He acknowledged the bitter fact that the team had played below-par cricket and stressed that now was the time to address the issues.

Wasim Jaffer also reacted, saying that contrary to popular belief, Pakistan was not eliminated because the USA v Ireland match was played in the rain, but because Pakistan lost to the USA United.

Cricket Ireland reacted to the elimination with a tweet stating that their hopes of reaching the Super 8s had been dashed by the weather in Florida, with the match abandoned without a ball being bowled. They expressed their disappointment but decided to try again one last time on Sunday.
