BATON ROUGE — In the middle of a busy route with customers waiting for their deliveries, a local UPS driver took a minute for a quick basketball break. This break, however, was an experience for an 11-year-old boy shooting hoops alone.

In a heartwarming display of kindness, the UPS driver stopped his truck in the Shenandoah area to play basketball with an 11-year-old boy named Chase McDowell.

“I was driving on my route and I saw him outside playing by himself and I thought, ‘Why don’t we stop and shoot a few baskets,'” UPS driver John Chester said. “We played HORSE together. We had a lot of fun in the heat. I just love bringing joy to people and meeting new people along the way.

The two were dribbling and shooting into McDowell’s neighbor’s driveway. The boy’s mother, Shelley FitzSimons, who was in the house cooking and cleaning, was touched by the gesture.

“I had no idea,” FitzSimons said. “He crosses the street to the neighbors’ house almost every day to play basketball. I didn’t even know anyone had stopped to play with him.

Chester is a father of three and a former athlete. He says he’s very family oriented and just loves connecting with people. “It’s not just about being friendly,” he says. He said UKK it represents a “Higher Power”.

“I am also a child of God. So I like to spread the word, you know, the Gospel,” he said.

As a father, Chester says he understands that children need a positive influence and encouragement in their lives. He says it was a game-changer in his life.

“I have had several people like that in my life and it has shaped me into the man I am today. I kind of like to convey that,” he added.

The simple act of kindness from the UPS driver made Chase smile. The boy’s mother said he was very excited to have played, but had great worry.

“He said he was tired from playing at the park earlier, so he missed the photos while he was being filmed,” his mother laughed.

The UPS driver’s gesture reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Plus, in a world where everything moves so fast, there’s nothing wrong with taking a break from time to time!
