Aberdeen Highland Games canceled with thousands announced hours before

The Highland Games in Aberdeen were canceled on Sunday morning due to unexpected heavy rain overnight. The popular event was due to return to Hazlehead Park on Sunday June 16, with around 10,000 people expected.

Spectators were set to watch a range of events from Pipe Band competitions to Tug o’ War to Highland Dancing and much more. The Highland Games are a day full of fun for the whole family; traditional Highland Games events, quality trade and charity stands, stage performances from professional artists as well as local community groups and a range of activities that can be enjoyed by all ages.

However, unexpected overnight showers made the event site and parking lot unsafe for those planning to attend today’s event. Those who purchased tickets will receive a refund within the next week.

Aberdeen City Council confirmed: “Unfortunately, due to heavier than expected rain overnight, making the event venue and car park unsafe, the Highland Games at Hazlehead Park, which was due to take place today , were canceled. Refunds will be issued via Eventbrite within the next week.

Those who planned to attend the event were disappointed and shared their frustration on social media. One wrote: “What a shame! Typical Scottish weather!!!” and another added: “Very sad, I hope it gets postponed. Last year on the same day (June 18) there was wonderful weather and we had the best day with the kids.”
