“I have opportunities that weren’t afforded to me in my 20s and 30s,” Jennifer Lopez on her evolution in Hollywood

“I have opportunities that weren’t afforded to me in my 20s and 30s,” Jennifer Lopez on her evolution in Hollywood

Jennifer Lopez, 53, said she is now enjoying opportunities in Hollywood that she didn’t have when she was a young actress.

In January, Lopez starred as an action hero in the Prime Video film Shotgun Wedding.

She recently finished filming the sci-fi adventure Atlas and stars as a military-trained rogue assassin in the new Netflix thriller The Mother.

“I think it’s really because I have these opportunities to play these roles that I wasn’t even offered in my 20s and 30s,” Lopez, 53, said of his former bandmate of Parker, Jason Statham, who is known for his action roles.

“So it’s actually very empowering and when I get these scripts and I look at them.

“I just think there’s a really great story at the heart of it and (we looked at) how big of an action movie (it could) be, depending on which one we chose as a director,” she added to Yahoo! Entertainment.

“I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this.”

The actress, who also revealed she showed the film to her 15-year-old twins, Emme and Max, to get their feedback, added: “I think we’re used to seeing men in these kinds of roles avengers, protecting their children, but you I haven’t really seen a mother do this and a mother capable in this way.

Despite this, The Mother was widely criticized by critics who saw the film in previews.

The Guardian called it “a formulaic, muddled Netflix caper”, Digital Spy dismisses it as simply “an action thriller that’s a showcase for Jennifer Lopez”.

While the Hollywood Reporter wrote: “From the runway-ready fur hoodie she wears in the Alaskan wilderness to the flawless eye makeup and dewy complexion that withstands everything from childbirth to a knife fight…

“It’s a performance so loaded with celebrity baggage that she’ll never be fully convincing as a deadly assassin.”

The Mother premieres May 12 on Netflix
