(KRON) – A new banner is being unfurled in Yosemite National Park. On Monday, climbers scaled the park’s famous “El Capitan” wall and hung a sign reading “Stop the Genocide,” images shared with the KRON4 show.

The purpose of the banner is “to demand that Israel and the United States stop the genocide in Gaza and end the Israeli occupation of Palestine,” according to a press release from Climbers With Palestine.

“We are using our escalation skills to demand an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the brutal apartheid of its illegal occupation of Palestine. » said Miranda Oakley, 39, a professional climber and guide and founding member of Climbers With Palestine.

The banner is placed on the famous “Nose” course of the rock wall. It will fall around noon Tuesday, according to the group.

The climbers plan to spend Monday night sleeping on a small ledge of the wall. There is another team of climbers on the ground.

El Capitan is a 3,000 foot vertical rock face. Over the years, climbers have been killed or injured attempting to scale it.
