Since the moment The Acolyte took us inside Ueda’s noodle shop in the very first scene, the work of the series’ creature shop was on full display. As you browse the chatty diners, you might spot a tiny alien slurping a bowl of noodles and other species that would feel just as at home in the Mos Eisley cantina. Soon, the galaxy’s otherworldly inhabitants will play a larger role when the story returns to Khofar. Here, the Jedi must employ tracker Tynnan Bazil in their search for Wookiee Kelnacca (Joonas Suotamo) deep in the jungle.

Behind the scenes, the tracker and target are the work of Creature and Droid Effects Creative Supervisor Neal Scanlan and his team, a talented team of designers, modelers and fabricators who bring aliens to life, fantastic creatures and droids. The key, however, is to create something that is on the edge of our own reality. “A really effective design is one that somehow makes you feel like you wouldn’t be so surprised if you opened your garage door and the droid was there,” says Scanlan, whose team was behind designs such as BB-8 and porgs. “You wouldn’t wake up one morning screaming if you saw a bird in a tree that had just Star Wars. You wouldn’t run a mile.
