BOSTON – A group of students had to walk to the side of Interstate 93 in Boston after their school bus caught fire.

It happened shortly after 2:45 p.m. Monday while he was heading north on the highway in Dorchester.

The bus was carrying students and teachers from the Josiah Quincy School in Boston. All students and teachers were able to evacuate the bus before it caught fire and took to the road before being taken back to their school.

Boston Public Schools said all students on board were eighth graders and that four people, including some students, were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The bus was not part of the BPS fleet of yellow school buses but had been leased from a third party.

The school said any student who needs support can speak with a member of their support system.

Traffic interrupted on 93 North

Traffic on northbound I-93 came to a halt during the fire.

Massachusetts State Police said the bus was towed shortly after 4 p.m. and all lanes were now open. But traffic backups continued past Braintree around 6 p.m.
