Vanguard Academy Campus Builds Sensory Room

Two students will soon discover the benefits of a sensory room at Vanguard Academy Rembrandt

Linda Gomez says her two sons — who are autistic seventh graders at the charter school — gave input on what they would like to see in the room.

“My boys, they have PTSD now, in addition to their autism and their ADH, (this) is going to help them regulate or self-regulate in any crisis or situation that they might find themselves in,” said Gomez.

Vanguard Superintendent Dr. Narciso Garza said the sensory room is a necessary addition to the school campus that has been years in the making.

“We got together with Mr. Flores, our director of special education, students, staff and parents, just to get him ready for the 2024-2025 school year,” Garza said. “We are therefore looking forward to the work over the coming weeks.”

When completed, it will be the first Vanguard campus with a sensory room. Students in grades five through twelve will use it.

Campus Principal Dina Cano says the sensory room is a proud moment for her school.

Construction of the sensory room will cost between $20,000 and $25,000, and it will be funded by grants and public funds.
