BBC error as job advert asks candidates who identify as DEAD to apply for wanted role

A BBC mistake saw a coveted position advertised for candidates who “identify as dead”.

The broadcaster was promoting a new full-time Assistant Producer role at Audio North, in the classical music department, based at MediaCity UK, Salford.

The Manchester-based role was advertised via its mailing list as part of the BBC Extend program which aims to take “positive action” to make it more diverse.

The program is particularly aimed at deaf, disabled or neurodivergent people.

However, instead of the job description reading “identify as deaf,” it said: “to apply, you must identify as deaf, disabled, or neurodivergent.”

This error was allegedly shared on a classical music news website.

Unfortunately for the BBC, this information was quickly picked up by readers.

“I think they might mean ‘death inside,’ which applies to an overwhelming majority of today’s population,” one person commented.

A second wrote: “Anonymous proofreaders have a helpline for struggling marketers…they’re waiting for your call.” »

“Hahahaha!” I laughed way too hard than I should have,” laughed a third.

While another teased: “I know at least three people who are fully qualified for this role, but they don’t know it.”

It appears that the spelling mistake appears on the careers mailing list but not in the advert on the BBC Careers website.

The full advert reads: “This role is being announced as part of our BBC Extend program for disabled people.

“To apply for this role you must identify as deaf, disabled or neurodivergent and meet either the definition of disability in the Equality Act (2010) or the definition of disability in the Discrimination Against Women Act Disabled People (1995) if you are applying in Northern Ireland.

“You are broadly defined as disabled under both laws if you suffer from a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial, long-term negative or adverse effect on your ability to perform your normal daily activities.

“This definition includes apparent and non-apparent conditions and deficiencies, as well as medical conditions such as cancer, HIV or multiple sclerosis.”

The role has a salary of £27,500 – £37,500, depending on experience.

It is open to applicants who meet the requirements of the definition of disability in the Equality Act 2010 or the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
