Celebrating Freedom Day: A Message from IAM International President Brian Bryant

Celebrating Freedom Day: A Message from IAM International President Brian Bryant

Dear IAM family,

June 16, a pivotal moment in our history, marks the end of slavery in the United States. It is the day we honor the unwavering spirit of Black Americans who have fought tirelessly for equality since 1866. This historic milestone not only signifies the closing of a dark chapter, but also highlights the ongoing battle for democracy and economic justice for all.

Our union, a beacon of change, has played a central role in breaking down societal barriers. Through hard-won collective bargaining agreements, we have empowered workers from diverse backgrounds to achieve economic prosperity and confront threats like the erosion of voting rights.

OUR Department of Human Rights was tasked with focusing on social and economic justice and how identity and lived experiences affect the diversity of IAM membership. We are determined to safeguard these fundamental rights and we strongly oppose any legislation aimed at suppressing the voice of the people.

The strength of our union, our power, lies in our unity and in celebrating the dynamic diversity that defines us. For years, we have been at the forefront of the fight for racial justice, both in the workplace and beyond. We understand that racial justice and economic justice are intertwined, and we are steadfast in our commitment to making racial justice the cornerstone of our collective bargaining efforts. Let us enjoy the warmth of belonging and inclusiveness as we stand side by side in this fight for justice.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us reflect on our progress and recognize the work that remains to achieve true racial and economic equality for all. Let us also remember that the right to vote is fundamental to this pursuit, and we must remain vigilant in protecting this essential right. This reminder of our continuing fight for justice, a fight that is not yet won, should ignite our resolve and commitment to the cause, reminding us of the importance of our continued efforts.
