UGC NET 2024: Exam canceled due to compromised integrity, social media flooded with reactions from Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi and others

NEW DELHI: The Education Ministry on Wednesday evening announced the cancellation of the June 2024 UGC NET exam due to concerns over its integrity. The decision caused confusion among parents and students, hence the ministry clarified in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that only the UGC NET exam had been cancelled.

Candidates who had prepared for the NEET exam were surprised when they learned about the cancellation of UGC NET. This misunderstanding has caused widespread concern among parents.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the cancellation was prompted by information from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) suggesting possible compromises in the integrity of the exam.

The incident is another example of criticism of the National Testing Agency (NTA), which is responsible for organizing the main national entrance exams. Earlier this month, the NEET UG 2024 results were also criticized due to anomalies, including 67 students securing first rank nationally.

Following the cancellation, various political figures, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, criticized the government’s handling of the exams and expressed concerns over the future of students.

Mallikarjun Kharge, in a Hindi article on He pointed out that the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam reflects the determination and passion of thousands of students.

Reacting to the announcement, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed concerns over what she described as the BJP government’s negligence and corruption affecting the youth. She highlighted the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam following earlier concerns over irregularities in the NEET exam.

On the other hand, UGC Chairman Mr. Jagadesh Kumar, not reacting to the cancellation of UGC NET, retweeted the message of the Ministry of Education – announcing the cancellation of UGC NET in June 2024.

In response to the controversy, the education ministry also announced that the case would be handed over to the CBI for further investigation. The decision to cancel the exam has been taken to ensure transparency and maintain the sanctity of the exam process, and a new exam date will be announced soon.

Speaking about the NTA’s loss of credibility, the national president of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) said, “…NTA should be immediately banned and action taken against it…”

Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey spoke to ANI reacting to the cancellation of the UGC NET exam, saying, “The future of 24 lakh students is in limbo due to NEET-UG exam paper leak. Now the government has canceled the UGC-NET due to paper leak. Is the NTA so negligent? No one is ready to take responsibility?
