Gary Lineker in clumsy gaffe on live TV as Frank Lampard joke sees studio shut up

Gary Lineker appeared to make an awkward, bald joke at Frank Lampard during the BBC’s Euro 2024 coverage last night as the studio went silent.

Chelsea legend Lampard was part of the pundit team for the broadcaster’s coverage of Germany’s 2-0 win over Hungary on Wednesday.

The studio faces Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate and is close to a fan park that shows tournament matches. Lineker and the team turn away from the monument for the broadcasts, with a panoramic background photo of the monument during live television coverage.

A large screen separates the BBC crew and fans, with Lineker explaining he wished they would take it down so he could “see all the punters”.

“If they took the screen away, they wouldn’t be able to watch the game,” Lineker said.

Lampard joked: “They would see behind our heads! They wouldn’t show up for that!”

Lineker replied: “No one wants to see the back of your head these days, do they Frank? That’s for sure.”

The laughter in the studio died down as Lineker continued to analyze the game. The broadcast footage zooms in on Lampard, whose expression quickly changes from a smile to an impassive face.

The clip has since been viewed 3.3 million times, with fans left in hysterics following the exchange.

“That’s wild of Gary,” one said.

“Savage! Poor Lampard,” added another.
