Samsung’s Texas chip factory may not be ready until 2026

Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor chip factory in Taylor, Texas, USA would not be operational until 2026. The company had announced plans to invest $17 billion to set up this chip factory , but it had to invest more due to construction and other costs. overhead costs increased compared to the company’s original plans.

Samsung’s Texas chip factory expected to make 2nm and 4nm chips

According to a report from MySA, Samsung’s new semiconductor chip factory in central Texas will begin operating in 2026. While the report claimed the original plan was to start operations in July 2024, company executives South Korean officials argue that this is the same delay reported. in 2023 and this is not an additional delay.

When the initial delay in operations was reported in December 2023, it was stated that mass production of the plant had been delayed until 2025. However, this does not appear to be the case.

Samsung received $6.4 billion in benefits from the US government under the US CHIPS and Science Act. This law aims to incentivize leading chip designers and manufacturers to establish factories in the United States and develop the local semiconductor chip design and manufacturing ecosystem. Ideally, this would reduce the United States’ dependence on China, South Korea and Taiwan for semiconductor chips.

Samsung chip factory will improve Texas economy

Samsung has reportedly decided to increase its investment to $25 billion for this factory. This factory will include chip design and manufacturing sections, employing approximately 17,000 people when fully operational. The company is also collaborating with local schools, colleges and universities to create more talent needed for the factory in the future.

Earlier this month, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) opened a new highway called Samsung Highway. This four-lane road will improve transportation in and out of the facility and connect it to Austin. Since the Samsung plant is expected to improve Texas’ economy, improvements were also made to existing roads, water lines and turn lanes.
