Son Heung-min broke his silence after his Tottenham teammate Rodrigo Bentancur used a racist slur when referring to the striker.

Appearing on Uruguayan television, a presenter asked Bentancur for a Tottenham shirt, before replying: “Sonny’s? It could also be Sonny’s cousin because they all look the same.”

Anti-discrimination charity Kick it Out subsequently received a “significant number” of complaints about racist abuse.

Bentancur apologized on Instagram, adding that his comments were a “very bad joke.”

Bentancur posted: “Sonny brother! I apologize for what happened, it was just a really bad joke.

“You know I love you and I will never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone! I love you, brother!”

And on Thursday, Son, on his own social networks, responded: “I spoke with Lolo. He made a mistake, he knows it and apologized.

“Lolo would never have intended to intentionally say anything offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.

“We are past all of this, we are united and we will be together again in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”

In a club statement, Tottenham stressed that it would offer “ongoing training to all players, in line with our diversity, equality and inclusion objectives.”
