Ohio U.S. Senate Candidate Bernie Moreno Sends Message About Law Enforcement

ASHVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — The campaign season will soon begin to heat up for a highly anticipated U.S. Senate race in Ohio that the eyes of the entire country will be following.

The race pits Republican candidate Bernie Moreno against incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). Moreno stopped in Ashville, Ohio, on Friday to speak with law enforcement.

Moreno said he wants to ensure qualified immunity remains intact.

“Without qualified immunity, there would be a mass exodus of the police force, for obvious reason,” Moreno said.

Qualified immunity protects government employees, such as police officers, from civil suits for actions such as improper use of force, unless it can be clearly proven that the use of force was unconstitutional.

Efforts are being made both in Ohio and nationally to reduce the law – or eliminate it.

“This is about putting us in a society of chaos and mayhem and I will not allow that to happen,” Moreno said.

Moreno said officers are “almost perfect” and should not be in a position where they have no protection.

“The statistics are quite remarkable for police officers. They are almost perfect. I mean you’re talking about an extremely small number of problems and the problems that you’re trying to solve,” Moreno said. “Can you imagine if you told a negative story, it would never happen, and all of a sudden you would lose everything you own? You would never do this job.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Brown’s campaign said, “Sherrod works across the aisle to ensure sheriffs and local law enforcement have the resources they need . The spokesperson also said Brown supports maintaining qualified immunity.

Moreno also criticized Brown’s border stance and the bipartisan border bill that Brown voted for.

“The bipartisan legislation he’s talking about would essentially put in place permanent amnesty, permanent parole, for people who have violated our laws. It was a terrible bill,” Moreno said.

In a statement, Brown’s team said, “Bernie Moreno is trying to distract from his history of lying to Ohioans, opposing the bipartisan border security deal, which was endorsed by Border Patrol agents, and opposition to Sherrod’s FEND Off Fentanyl Act, who will support the law. enforcement by restricting the flow of fentanyl across the southern border.

Moreno says he’s also committed to creating a more affordable economy and that people shouldn’t feel like it’s a luxury to buy fries at McDonalds.

Election day is set for November 5.
