Colorado residents on alert as Aurora police search for masked person with gun filmed knocking on doors

When David Johnson received an alert on his phone that there was someone at his door on June 14, just before midnight, he suspected it might be a problem. But when he checked his cameras, he didn’t see anyone, so he opened the door.

“When I first came out, the person had already left. So I watched the video and was quite surprised to see a person all in black, except for a white ski mask” , Johnson said. “I knew something was seriously wrong.”

It turns out he had just missed a scary situation.

Aurora police are hoping the public can help identify the masked suspect who knocked on doors with a handgun.

“A few minutes later, when I looked closer, I could see a gun in his hand, and in fact, the last time he knocked on the door, he was using the butt of his weapon,” Johnson said.

He said he wasn’t the first victim that night. A few minutes before, one of his neighbors knocked on his door and was greeted by a masked person, who had personal information about him. The neighbor closed the door and then called the police. Then the alleged crook hit Johnson’s house.

Johnson said he learned all of this because he and his neighbor discussed everything to help police find the masked person.

“As citizens, I think we need to look out for each other,” Johnson said.

Johnson hopes police will arrest this person soon and in the future they can do more to prevent something like this from happening to anyone else.

“I actually support the Aurora Police in strengthening their force, safely and well-trained, so they can be more responsive and deter nonsense like this,” Johnson said.

And to his Aurora neighbors, he said, don’t take your safety and security for granted.

A masked suspect was filmed banging on the door with a handgun.

“Please be safe and don’t open your door to anyone,” Johnson said.

Police said the video shows the masked person was driving a dark-colored SUV and wearing unique shoes and a lanyard or jewelry around their neck. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 720-913-7867.
