Anime Recommendations Inspired by Doctor Who’s Hall of Discord – Otaku USA Magazine

The new season of Doctor Who is over and we have gotten as many answers as we have new questions. Who is Mrs. Flood? What will the next companion look like? Were there three Sutekhs in Doctor’s Day? Only a few of these questions will be answered… but we will have to wait until Christmas for the rest of the story. In the meantime, we’re staying busy this summer by theorizing, looking back, and letting this season’s big reveals inspire our vision a little.

To get you through the next few months, here’s an anime watchlist inspired by the long-running sci-fi series’ Hall of Discord: a relatively new invention bringing together villains old and new into a more organized picture. Many more are mentioned, and still more are likely to join them, but check out this trio of anime to (sort of) relive the early episodes of Ncuti Gatwa:

The games of the gods we play

God Games We Play

There is the Toymaker, the god of games.

Brought back last year Doctor Who special “Laughter,“The Toymaker is a long-standing and very powerful villain in the series. But it’s been a long time since he last appeared on our screens. Although he is unstable, vengeful and chaotic, there is one rule he will always respect: the rule of fair play. And we can think of an extremely recent show with equally gaming-obsessed deities: The games of the gods we play.

Rather than challenging players one-on-one, the gods in this series challenge groups of specially-endowed humans in variations of classic games: board, cards, playing field, etc. Although the games are not deadly, they have hidden rules. And discovering these rules is just as much a part of the games as winning them. Luckily, expert player Fay and ancient god Leshea make a powerful duo.

ClassicLoid

ClassicLoid

There is Maestro, the god of music.

Make your debut in the Doctor Who In the episode “The Devil’s Chord”, Maestro deleted the 1963 music out of a desire to be the only musical act in the universe. Fortunately for the stars of ClassicLoid, the divine composers who manifest in our world seem be by our side. At least, most of them.

Normal children Kanae and Sousuke find themselves in the company of two strange men claiming to be Mozart and Beethoven, in addition to being acquaintances of Kanae’s father. They, along with others claiming to be resurrected composers, can wield a strange power called Musik. And while most of these ClassicaLoids appear to be of the good sort, Bach and Wagner take turns as the series’ antagonists.

Oh, suddenly Egyptian God

Oh, suddenly Egyptian God

The mother, the father and the others.

Besides being what many people probably thought at the end of Doctor WHO episode “The Legend of Ruby Sunday” Oh, suddenly Egyptian God is a net original anime based on the popular character designs of Yuka. The series follows the misadventures of Egyptian deities, rendered as roly-poly caricatures of themselves. They’re a little philosophical, a little silly and a little adorable.

And yes, Set (the inspiration for the villain Sutekh from “Pyramids of Mars”) is one of them. While he is still the god of destruction, this version of Set is much less terrifying. His worst behavior is usually playing pranks on his rival Horus.
