Prince William has ordered England’s players to stay calm and carry on in a secret speech to Gareth Southgate’s desperate players following their disappointing draw against Denmark.

The future king spoke to the England team in the dressing room after their match at the Waldstadion on Thursday after the players put in a below-par performance which drew widespread criticism.

But the Prince of Wales attempted to boost morale immediately after the final whistle by telling Southgate’s side not to overreact to the frustrating display.

“He was just trying to keep us all positive,” revealed England midfielder Adam Wharton.

“He said it wasn’t the end of the world. We thought we were still top of the group, we didn’t lose, we drew, we just have to think about the game, see how we can improve and look forward to the next game. That’s all you can do in a football tournament.

The prince’s sentiments were echoed by England number one Jordan Pickford, who insists the team are relaxed after their unforgettable evening in Frankfurt.

“We’re fine, we’re relaxed, it’s a football tournament, you have to enjoy the moment while you’re here,” the Everton star said.

“We have four points and we are top of the group. We know we can do a lot better in matches, but we haven’t been beaten.

“We have the same points after two games as in the last two tournaments and I would say we are calm.

“The noise outside is that we have to play on Tuesday but there is no need to panic. For me personally, we know that we have not reached our peak yet.

“Everyone is behind the manager. Everything we do in training and in meetings, he delivers brilliantly and gives us the right game plan.

“We weren’t perfect against Denmark, but it’s a good feeling because we know we can improve.

“The narrative will change when we start to peak, but for now it’s all about Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, Shaw is a major injury doubt for England’s final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday, with the left-back also expected to miss Sunday’s training session.

The Manchester United star is not giving up hope of participating in the tournament despite his inability to recover from the hamstring injury which kept him out for five months.

But having missed Saturday’s session at the team’s HQ in Weimar, it is understood Shaw is likely to miss Sunday’s training as well.

England doctors will ask whether Shaw can take part in Monday’s training session, but even if he is included there appears little hope he can play a role against Slovenia on Tuesday. Shaw has yet to play a single minute of football here in Germany.
