Former Pakistan team director and interim head coach Mohammad Hafeez had urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) not to even think of removing Shaheen Shah Afridi as T20I captain.

Afridi only led Pakistan in a five-match T20I series against New Zealand in January 2024, which the men in green lost 4-1.

However, he was eventually removed and Babar Azam returned as limited-overs captain.

Hafeez felt the decision was unfair as Afridi was not given enough time to show what a good leader he could be.

“It’s not even the right thing to think about changing (the) Pakistan T20 captain,” Hafeez said according to journalist Arfa Feroz Zake on Xformerly known as Twitter.

Afridi recently participated in the 2024 T20 World Cup and took five wickets in four matches at an average of 21 and an economy rate of 6.56.

Pakistan lost to the United States of America and India before fighting back to defeat Canada and Ireland.

Pakistan Squad for T20 World Cup 2024: Babar Azam (captain), Saim Ayub, Mohammad Rizwan (week), Fakhar Zaman, Azam Khan (week), Usman Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir, Abbas Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abrar Ahmed
