‘It’s wild’ – Laois-born record-breaking Irish swimmer ‘shocked’

There’s fun in Portarlingon after Shane Ryan made headlines this weekend with a new Irish senior record in the 50m freestyle on the penultimate day of racing at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade .

Ryan was the first swimmer on the blocks on Saturday morning, the flamboyant 30-year-old in the pool stopping the clock at 21.82.

The time made him the fastest Irish swimmer of all time in a long course (50m) pool. That time shaved 0.12 seconds off Tom Fannon’s 21.94 at the Irish Open and Olympic Trials in May, which he matched yesterday at the Sette Colli Meet in Rome.

Shane, who is based in National Aquatic Center Dublin, spoke after the event. MORE BELOW THE IMAGE.

“I’m shocked, my goal was to do 21.89. It’s my first 50 free in two years, I’m delighted. I had shoulder surgery about two and a half years ago, so I’m excited about that time. I honestly don’t know what to say, it’s crazy,” he said.

The former Olympian was born in Pennsylvania to Tom and Beth. Tom is originally from Portarlington, he still has many family who have passionately followed his career.

Ryan will attempt to light up the pool again on Sunday June 23 in the 50m freestyle final at 5:30 p.m. following his record-breaking performance.
