Disruption at Manchester Airport has led to cancellations “in the 10s”, the airport said this morning.

But as the day progressed, more than 60 flights were canceled from the airport, according to flight tracking site FlightRadar., externalwhile nearly 80 were delayed.

An airport spokesperson told the BBC on Sunday that there were also arrival diversions because “planes cannot take off” due to limited space at the airport. This makes it harder for planes to be accepted, meaning they will be sent elsewhere.

The power outage caused major problems, including baggage handling at the airport, which was hit hard.

Jet2, one of the airlines affected by the disruption, is informing passengers that it has been unable to load bags onto planes as the airport’s baggage system remains unusable and it will do its best to reunite the passengers with their luggage.

Airports are very finely tuned operations, with complex flow patterns that operate at near maximum efficiency: so when a problem arises, there is little bandwidth and the systems back up very quickly.
