Selfie mistake could lead police to luxury car thief

A selfie taken with a mobile phone left in an abandoned stolen car could lead Victorian police to those responsible for the theft.

A red Alfa Romeo was stolen from her home in Paisley Close, Templestowe, and then abandoned on the Monash Highway near Hawthorn on May 1, police said.

The luxury car was discovered missing by its owners the following morning.

Six days later, police located the car traveling at high speed on Auburn Road in Hawthorn before turning onto the Monash Highway, when the front left wheel came loose.

That’s when the driver abandoned the car and fled.

Police searched the car and found a cell phone in the front seat with the photo of two people they believed could help them with the investigation.

“We would like anyone who may know who this person in the selfie is to call Crime Stoppers,” a police spokesperson said. 3AW radio.

A number of items were also allegedly stolen from a Mercedes which was also parked at Templestowe’s garage.
