BBC’s Gabby Logan ‘shocked’ by replays showing horror of Barnabas Varga injury

Gabby Logan was left “shocked” after the BBC aired replays of a sickening incident which left a Hungarian player seriously injured during their Euro 2024 win over Scotland.

The crucial Group A match was halted towards the end of the second half after striker Barnabas Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and hit the ground, apparently knocked unconscious.

There was a lengthy stoppage as Varga was immediately put into a recovery position by his teammates, with medical staff entering the field and setting up barriers around him to shield him from view while they treated him.

Captain Dominic Szoboszlai reportedly cried while doctors treated his teammate. Varga was then carried on a stretcher, still out of sight, before being rushed to hospital.

Given the obvious severity of Varga’s injury, viewers at home were shocked when replays of the incident aired with the player clearly in poor condition.

At the full-time whistle, Logan, who was covering the BBC, admitted she and her colleagues were also “shocked” to see the replays broadcast, as she explained why it had happened, before to take stock of Varga’s condition.

“We were as shocked as you were when they replayed this incident,” she told viewers. “There are protocols around this sort of thing after what happened to Christian Eriksen three years ago and we were very surprised that UEFA chose to play in this replay, which is why we immediately cut to wide angle as soon as we could.”

Minutes later, she added that a statement from the Hungarian Federation confirmed that Varga was “in a stable condition and is conscious in a hospital in Stuttgart”, calling it “fantastic news” and “very, very positive”.

Following Varga’s injury, 10 minutes were added at the end of the second half and Hungary scored the winning goal in the 99th minute through Kevin Csoboth, as Scotland were eliminated. The Hungarian players celebrated their victory by holding up Varga’s jersey at the end of the match.
