Kidnappers arrested in Bihar, victim rescued by Jalpaiguri cops

MP, June 23, 2024, Jalpaiguri: Two kidnappers from Motihari district of Bihar were apprehended by the Jalpaiguri police with the help of local authorities, resulting in the rescue of the abductee who was later brought to Jalpaiguri.

Those arrested were produced in court on Saturday. According to Jalpaiguri Kotwali police sources, Shailen Barman, a resident of Bodaganj in Baropetia Gram Panchayat of Jalpaiguri Sadar block, lodged a written complaint with the Kotwali police station.

He said his son Ripon Barman (25), employed as a mason in New Jalpaiguri, called their neighbor Vikram Das’ mobile phone on June 20, informing him of his kidnapping by unknown persons who demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh.

Upon receiving the complaint, the police traced the location of the mobile phone and sent a special team to rescue Ripon Barman from Motihari, Bihar.

They managed to apprehend the kidnappers, Mohammad Sakir from Minabazar area in Motihari and Vivek Kumar Patel from Bhavanipur Jirat in Motihari. Shailen Barman said, “My son was kidnapped from New Jalpaiguri. The kidnappers demanded Rs 5 lakh as ransom. I lodged a written complaint with the Kotwali police station on June 20, providing all details, including the mobile number.

Deputy public prosecutor Mrinmoy Banerjee informed that the arrested persons were produced before the Jalpaiguri district court on Saturday, where the judge ordered their remand for 14 days.
