Inter and AC Milan meet with Webuild to discuss saving the iconic San Siro

After years of discussions, debates and false dawns, a company has come forward to revamp the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. More commonly known as the San Siro, the home of Inter and AC Milan has become outdated and is in dire need of modernization if the city’s two clubs are to continue playing there.

Each explored the possibility of building a new stadium elsewhere, but the combination of Italy’s grueling bureaucracy and the idea of leaving such an iconic venue always stood in their way.

But today, Italian construction company Webuild held a presentation ceremony with figures from both Serie A clubs as well as Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala.

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni and Inter CEO Alessandro Antonello were among the spectators at the event at the Palazzo Marino, led by Massimo Ferrari, managing director of WeBuild.

What does Webuild plan to do with San Siro?

Ferrari told reporters his company “would be ready to start work as early as 2025,” breaking it down into smaller projects that would only reduce the stadium’s capacity by 5,000 to 6,000 seats at a time.

This would allow Milan and Inter to continue playing there throughout the rebuilding work, with details of what can be expected having been explained in several press articles in recent days.

As reported by the Milanese edition of The Republic, the Webuild project would include several key points, starting with a complete renovation of the entire first floor. This would include both seating and indoor spaces, modernizing the facilities available to supporters and significantly improving the match experience.

At the second and third levels, the work is much simpler, consisting of a structural upgrade and the installation of new seating, while much more impactful changes will be made outside the current structure of the pitch.

Webuild plans to improve access to the stadium itself for fans entering, but also to the parking lot, where the idea is to make entry and exit easier while still leaving room for many more vehicles.

There are also plans to construct a second large building – occupying around 9,000 square meters and accessible from the stadium – which will house a museum, restaurants and other amenities.

Yet one of the most interesting details emerged in a report from Corriere della Serathe Italian newspaper highlighting the plan to significantly increase the number of VIP and hospitality tickets.

San Siro currently only has space for 2,900 spectators in these areas, well below the figures for some of European football’s top stadiums, meaning Milan and Inter are losing out on huge amounts of revenue.

Webuild’s project will take this figure to almost 13,000, with reports estimating the entire project will cost almost €400 million ($428.5 million), but this figure will need to be confirmed if work continues .

Both clubs have made significant progress in their idea of leaving San Siro, but the Milan mayor hopes that what they saw at the presentation will convince them to abandon their respective plans.

“This afternoon, WeBuild presented Milan, Inter and the Municipality of Milan with a feasibility study for a major renovation of the San Siro stadium,” Giuseppe Sala wrote in the Instagram post above.

“In my opinion, this is an extraordinary project and I hope that the teams will take it seriously, knowing that both are also working on other options. The feasibility study suggests a program lasting a total of three years, with a completely acceptable reduction in the stadium’s capacity during the works.

“In the coming weeks, the teams will meet with WeBuild to further explore the project and at the end of these meetings it will be possible to have an estimate of the investment.”

It’s still early days, but it appears San Siro looks set to remain the home of Milan’s two giant clubs.
