How Gabrielle Union’s Water-Inspired 2024 Met Gala Look Came to Be

If you’re looking for a floral reference in Gabrielle Union’s 2024 Met Gala dress by Michael Kors, you’ll find yourself playing a lost game of Where’s Waldo. She and stylist Thomas Christos Kikis “wanted to go a little further, beyond just floral elements” for the “Garden of Time” theme.

“Ultimately, I was inspired by the idea that beauty and creativity, in many ways, can protect us, even if temporarily from the worst aspects of our human experience and what we are faced with. we face,” he told Fashionista. “It’s kind of this esoteric concept that we explored and I was like, ‘Okay, there’s a lot of floral elements, and I know a lot of people are going to go in that direction.'”

This led them to instead interpret another crucial element for gardens: water.

“Every year we like to interpret the theme in a way that doesn’t just look like the designer – which is always our main approach and concern, that we do justice to the designer’s vision,” says Kikis. “But also, it reflects what Gabrielle stands for and what she feels and what her year is like.”

The dress – dripping with meticulously placed hand-embroidered sequins in an ombré effect – took 9,500 hours and 12 artisans and, for Kikis, “embodies water, fluidity and continuous progress and change”. Sparkling Tiffany & Co. jewelry adds extra glamor to the ensemble.

The process began last December. Union and Kikis referenced the intricate embroidery, beading and floral embellishments of previous Michael Kors collections, but ultimately abandoned it in favor of an elemental approach. Union chose the water theme, then passed the reins to the rest of the team.

“She’s a really good collaborator and she doesn’t really overanalyze – as long as the cut is there and it’s flattering and she (can point out) certain things that she’s more comfortable with to carry,” Kikis said of Union. “But we’ve worn Michael Kors for so many years, and she loves it. She knows that in terms of fit and all that, she’s in good hands.”

Despite the intricate craftsmanship that went into the look, the Michael Kors dress still exudes a sense of ease, which is an essential part of Union’s personal style.

“She’s not one to make a fuss,” Kikis says of Union, noting that she likes to wear dramatic outfits that she can also have fun in and “doesn’t constrain her.” Kors easily masters the balance between drama and comfort, especially as a brand that “highlights a woman’s figure in such a chic way and classic form.”

At the end of the night, Kikis hopes Union will have fun, be “comfortable” and “love it as much as (him) and Michael (do).” But the Kikis’ ultimate goal for the evening? That “Dwyane (Wade) loves it.”

“If I get approval from Dwyane… If she leaves the room and he makes a very reactive comment, then I know I’m doing a good job,” he says.
