Man arrested for carrying firearm after traffic stop in Boston

BOSTON — A 27-year-old Charlestown man was arrested Monday evening on gun possession charges following a traffic stop in the Charlestown neighborhood, police said.

At 9:08 p.m., officers from the Boston Police District A-15 Crime Unit observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on Polk Street.

The car then parked in front of a fire hydrant near the intersection of Medford and Polk streets.

As police approached, the occupants attempted to flee, accidentally locking a passenger inside and setting off the car alarm.

Police asked the individuals to return to the vehicle for identification, which they did.

During a subsequent search of the car, officers discovered a Glock 26 handgun with one round in the chamber and 11 rounds in the magazine.

Gabriel Toribio, 27, of Charlestown, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device.

Toribio is expected to be arraigned in Charlestown District Court.

The arraignment date was not immediately available.
